What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy involves a trained therapist helping you to access your unconscious mind to help resolve issues in your life. Having increased access to your unconscious mind allows you to be more creative, more disciplined, more relaxed, more healthy, and more complete. It is like recruiting extra resources within yourself that you didn't know you had.

What is your unconscious mind?

This is the part of you that controls functions without your conscious awareness. Basically, it is any mental process which affects your behaviour but that you are usually not aware of.

How does my unconscious mind help me?

Once you learn a particular skill really well, it begins to come under unconscious control. Once you know how to type, you don't need to consciously "think" about where the letters are. To type the word "yes", you do not need to think "find the 'y' key, press it with your finger, then look for the 'e' key...". You simply think "yes", and your fingers automatically do their job. That is the magic of your unconscious mind, handling complex tasks for you, without you needing to "think" about it.

The best part - being in the zone

One of the best things about the unconscious mind is that not only does it comfortably handle complexity for you, but it is actually pleasurable for us to allow it to do so. Many people are familiar with the feeling of being "in the zone", where you do something you are really good at, and you thoroughly enjoy doing it. It almost feels like you are sitting back and watching a movie of something happening - only it is you doing the acting in the movie. Imagine driving your car on a beautiful winding road on a sunny day. You notice your hands skillfully handling the wheel and gearshift, perfectly smooth, perfectly in control. You are doing something that you once found difficult - and you couldn't be more relaxed. It's incredibly satisfying. You feel energized and peaceful at the same time, and all is right with the world.

The role of hypnotherapy

That energized and peaceful feeling of being "in the zone" is what we aim to achieve in hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is simply a set of techniques where we work together to listen to and communicate with your unconscious mind. We will work on relaxation, awareness of body sensations, and will learn how to listen carefully so we can hear the unconscious, which is normally too quiet to be noticed amidst the hustle of our busy daily lives. We will work co-operatively to access and harness the amazing creative powers of your unconscious mind, and put them to use in the areas that you choose to work on. You have the ability to do amazing things - solve your own problems, change your habits, develop ingenious strategies and accomplish great personal goals. And you can do these things so much more easily and with so much more relaxation and excitement when you use ALL the parts of your mind, in harmony.
